So I know I’m about a month late, but I found ring blanks and wanted to finish them before I opened up (which will be [fingers crossed] sometime this coming week).

Unfortunately, Michael’s only seems to carry 4 of these ring blanks at a time, and hasn’t replenished their stock yet. So, since I want to keep one for myself, I have three to sell for now; two of the Leslie Howard design ones (pictured below) and one Anthony Andrews design one (using the red wax seal image below). As soon as I can get more blanks, I’ll make more rings, so let me know which of the two you would like to see more of.

Alright, someone should write a new script for a revival play or something, and the aforementioned scene will be in it, and everything will be beautiful and nothing will hurt. I'll have to go find your previous post on this matter, because, well it is my heart.

Yes. Both the Richmond scene in all of it’s full, jucy, mushy, romantic, amazing glory and the “dirty old Jew” ending will be included. As for my previous posts about the Richmond scene, I know I branched into a rant about a month ago when talking about the musical, and there have to be at least two or three more back in the bowels of the blog. I’m quite passionate about it as well ;)

Just a note- I wholly and completley adore the way the book ends! I love the whole book. I soooo wish they would make movie that was totally accurate to the main book. I would want them to keep the Jew part in though, because it points out so clearly how hypocritical the revolutionaries are. Its creates a main theme in the book. It isn’t anti-semitism, its against it. I first read this book in my sophomore english (awesome class) and I loved discussing the theme here. Percy chose to disguise himself as a Jew because he knew people. He knew that they would ignore him because of their stupid predjudice. Note how in a time everyone calls everyone else citezen for the sake of equality, the jew calls him “your excellency.” It is so characteristic of the times and the of the real face of the French Revolution.

This. All this. Whether it was Orczy’s intent or not to speak out about antisemitism, it would be very easy in a film to convey the hypocrisy inherent in the revolutionary mindset by using the ‘Old Dirty Jew’ disguise.

And it does show how well Percy understand the people he’s fighting. He plays directly into their prejudice in such a way to completely evade suspicion. It’s not pretty or polite, but it’s damn smart.

Can I just say how much I love you guys and this discussion?

Can we do more of this?

Alexander Korda (the producer) was Hungarian, and had been born in a town not far from Baroness Orczy’s family’s farm.

Korda had recently had great success with the actor Charles Laughtonin the film The Private Life of Henry VIII, so he asked Laughton to play the role of Sir Percy. But when the announcement went out to the press, the reaction from the Pimpernel’s many fans was negative; the pug-nosed Laughton was thought inappropriate to play the suave Sir Percy.

Me too! I personally LOVE the ending of the book, and have often wondered why no adaptation has used it. I’m sure it has something to do with how horrible the Jew disguise is in terms of stereotyping and antisemitism, but couldn’t we find some other, less offensive disguise for Percy? Couldn’t he just be some old, hunched over Frenchman instead? We really don’t get to see the extent of Marguerite’s devotion for Percy without it. And everything they say to eachother at the end! Gaah it’s so romantic and wonderful!

I don't know if I've asked you this before, but... Could you perhaps recommend some Pimpernel fanfiction? :P

Well, the only one that I remember reading that was REALLY good (I wasn’t a very huge fanfic person) was one called “Falcon in the Dive”, and was a sequel to the musical. The musical ends with Percy having the League tie up Chauvelin and drag him off to Paris and deliver him to Robsepierre, claiming that Chauvelin is the Pimpernel. And just to make certain that he believes it, Percy puts his seal ring on Chauvelin’s finger. In this fanfic, Chauvelin convinces Robespierre of what actually happened, and then decides to use his newfound power to his advantage. He convinces arristocrats that he is the Pimpernel, and gets them to trust him before handing them off to the Comitty. He also begins sending notes to the league members, sealed with the seal of the Scarlet Pimpernel, telling them to meet him, and then capturing them one by one until Percy is left to face him alone.

I know I’ve posted it here in the past, but I can’t find it, and my internet searches are coming up blank. Thankfully, being the pack rat that I am, I still have a copy printed out in my “All Things Pimpernel” binder, so if worse comes to worse I’ll retype it and post a link to it, because from what I remember, it was that good.

In the meantime, http://www.fanfiction.net/book/Scarlet-Pimpernel/ has probably the most comprehensive collection of Pimpernel related fanfic. I can’t personally recomend any of them, but a lot of the summaries seem like interesting reads.

Do you know of any rendition that as this scene fro the book in it? Unfortunately, no. And I hate that because it’s my all time favorite quote from the novel! I’ve ranted on several times before about how that entire Richmond chapter isn’t fully in any of the adaptations, so I won’t do it again here, but that one quote just sums up Percy so beautifully, and all of the adaptations are missing it.

Okay so like if someone asks “Cutest fictional couples ever?” and the Blakeneys are not on your list, you sincerely need to go read or watch The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Let me tell you about Sir Percy Blakeney.

Percy Blakeney is so fly, he can use the word “fly” without looking like a dork. He is so fierce, the ladies of the court ask him for fashion tips instead of his smokin’ hot wife. He can fight, drive, sail, manage his estate and do it all while looking dapper as fuck in suits he designed himself because FUCK GENDER NORMS. He met the most clever woman in all of Europe and decided he wouldn’t be satisfied until he made her his wife.

Percy has suffered. His mom got dementia when he was young and it hit his father so hard Percy had to watch both his parents waste away and die. Because of this everyone assumes and therefore treats him like he’s an idiot even though he’s smarter than all those fuckers. So what does he do? He uses that to cover up the fact that he’s fucking vigilante. That’s right. Percy Blakeney is Batman without being a dick about it.

He literally has the manliest dudes in England clamoring to be like him. When he heard innocent people were being tried unjustly in France during the Revolution, he gathered up his bros and started a network of spys and smugglers to get them out. All without his own wife knowing about it.

And he is so hung up on his woman he tells strangers about it. He doesn’t care who knows because he’s Sir Percival Blakeney and he’s above your approval.

*cough*

So yeah. Go read the Scarlet Pimpernel if you want a romance novel that’s fluffier than a teddy bear factory and also has a plot.

This is for DreamR because I’m convinced he is Sir Percy and I’m very excited to find someone on the internet who loves the Blakeneys as much as I do. <3

And then there’s Marguerite, who was frozen out by her husband for years without knowing why, but did she let that stand in her way? Hell no. She remembered what Percy was like when he was courting her, and never really gave up hope that that Percy would come back. And when she found out her husband’s secret identity and what he was up to in France, she didn’t sit at home, worrying and wringing her hands. She knocked on the door of one of his buddies, said, “GUESS WHAT BITCH WE’RE GOING TO FRANCE,” and then they went to France so Marguerite could save Percy’s goddamn life. They are a pair of unparalleled BAMFs, and I have a lot of feelings okay.

YES! I meant to go on about Marguerite, but was tired. XD

Let’s not forget she also outwitted Sir Andrew even though she was highly suspected of being a spy. That’s why Percy froze her out. He didn’t know if he could trust her. But he still loved her. It was their mutual love and faith in each other that kept their marriage together, even though their relationship was extremely turbulent for the first couple years.

She ran off to France to “either save his life or die with him.” Her loyalty is fucking unreal. And once there, she literally ran her feet raw in hopes of being able to warn them on time.

The Blakeneys are HARDCORE.
